Threading Alternatives For Beadwork And Jewelry

March 3rd, 2010 Ethan O. Tanner Posted in Jewelry Making No Comments »

There are many issues about the choice of stringing material for beading. Here is an interesting article on the different stringing materials and their usage. One very important lesson I learned is that there is no one, all-purpose (Universal) stringing material. Here are the major stringing materials along with how and when to use each of them.

Silk has a wondrous "hand" (a soft, flexible feel). This thread comes in many sizes and colors. It comes packaged on spools, and "carded" with an attached needle. This is a classic stringing material and forms beautiful knots between pearls and beads. But, silk tends to be relatively fragile. It can stretch, be cut by abrasive beads, rot when wet, and pearls strung on silk should be re strung every few years. It is best to use silk when stringing pearls and lightweight, smooth-holed beads, only. A needle is necessary.

Nylon strand likewise comes in several sizes and colours. It is packaged on spools, on bobbins, and "carded" with a needle attached. Nylon may be utilized where-ever silk may and Is not as frail. This material knots beautifully and may be utilized for ivory stringing, in some threaded jewelry, seed beadwork, loom interweaving, for Peyote and other uncommon stitches, and coral beads.

Nylon stretches out a great deal less than silk, and it will not decompose once wet. Like silk, you should not employ beads with sharp edged holes or that are heavy. When you use nylon string, I would urge you coat your string with bee's wax or "Thread Heaven TM "prior to using to keep it from fraying. A needle is essential.

Bonded nylon is a good deal stronger form of nylon strand. The strands are physically bound together for improved strength and abrasion protection. While it knots well, it doesn't have the "feel" of silk.

Attached nylon comes in an variety of colors and smaller size reels. Attributable to its abrasion opposition, you can utilise it with "demanding", harsher stone beads; this comes close to being an "comprehensive Thread". Brand names** include: "Stringth" or "Silkon". A needle is necessary, tho' you can put "Super Glue" on the end to arrive at a "Self-needle". This is a preferable beading material of mine.

Fishing Line is a tough, semi-rigid, single string of plastic. It does not knot easily, and eventually sunlight or UV may cause it to break and come apart. Fishing line is bought on littler spools and is sold in sports equipment stores.

Personally, I use fishing line for two purposes. I use it to do my preliminary stringing while I am designing a necklace (I transfer the beads to a better material for the final product), and to string together "raw" strands of beads. There is no needle necessary. I would never use this material for a final beaded piece.

Can The Mohs Scale Help the Lapidary?

January 11th, 2010 Richard Rockman Posted in Jewelry Making, Used Lapidary Equipment No Comments »

The relative hardness of minerals is measured using the Mohs Scale. There are 10 minerals/levels of hardness on the Mohs Scale, the least hard is talc with a measurement of 1. The hardest mineral on the Mohs scale is the diamond with a measure of 10.There are also half measurements on the Mohs scale, 6.5, 7.5 for instance, but this article will not explore half measurements in any detail.

One of the ways a minerals "hardness" is determined is by the use of scratch test.  If a mineral is can be scratched by a harder mineral, but not a softer one, then the mineral will have a Mohs scoring equal to or greater than the softer mineral but less than the harder mineral.  For instance, Topaz has a Mohs 8 while Quartz has a Mohs rating of 7.  So, if an unknown mineral can be scratched by Topaz but not by Quartz then the specimen will have a Mohs rating of 7.

Even though the scale attempts to define the hardness of a mineral, it is a relative score.  It simply tells you that in comparison to another mineral, the sample specimen you are using is either harder or softer.  For a lapidary, this can be helpful information when grinding down the specimen and when it is being polished.

The minerals on the Mohs scale, ranked from 1 to 10 are:

  1. Talc
  2. Gypsum
  3. Calcite
  4. Fluorite
  5. Apatite
  6. Orthoclase
  7. Quartz
  8. Topaz
  9. Corundum
  10. Diamond

You have probably found yourself looking at a mineral specimen in which you were uncertain about its identity.  When faced with such a situation it can be helpful to know the Mohs scale to either help you identify the specimen, or, in the least to help you eliminate what the specimen isn't.

So, the next time you are getting ready to use your slab saw, lapidary equipment or faceting machine, don't forget the Mohs scale and how helpful it can be to you in identifying just what you're working with.

Stringing Choices For Beading And Jewelry Making

January 10th, 2010 Ethan O. Tanner Posted in Jewelry Making No Comments »

One very important lesson I learned is that there is no one, all-purpose (Universal) stringing material. Here are the major stringing materials along with how and when to use each of them. After you work with the various types of jewelry threads and lines you will find favorites for your work.

Silk has a marvelous "hand" (a soft, flexible feel). This thread gets in many sizes and colors. It arrives in packaged on spools, and "carded" with an attached needle. This is a standard stringing material and forms fine-looking knots between pearls and beads. But, silk tends to be relatively delicate. It can stretch, be cut by abrasive beads, rot when wet, and pearls strung on silk should be re strung every few years. It's best to use silk when stringing pearls and lightweight, smooth-holed beads, only. A needle is necessary.

Nylon thread also comes in many sizes and colors. It comes packaged on spools, on bobbins, and "carded" with a needle attached. Nylon can be used where-ever silk can and is not as fragile. This material knots beautifully and can be used for pearl stringing, in some strung jewelry, seed bead-work, loom weaving, for Peyote and other specialty stitches, and heishi. Nylon stretches much less than silk, and it won't rot when wet. Like silk, you shouldn't use beads with sharp edged holes or that are heavy. When you use nylon thread, I would recommend you coat your thread with bee's wax or "Thread HeavenTM " before use to prevent it from fraying. A needle is necessary.

Bonded Nylon is a much more effective form of nylon thread. The chains are physically bonded together for additional durability and abrasion protection. While it knots well, it does not have the "hand" of silk. Secured nylon gets in a assortment of colors and smaller spools. Because of its abrasion resistance, you are able to use it with "hard", more abrasive jewel beads; as a matter of fact these approximates to being a "Universal Thread". A needle is necessary, although you can put "Super Glue" on the end to form a "Self-needle". This is a favored beading material of mine.

Fishing Line is a hard, semi-rigid, single strand of plastic. It doesn't knot well, and in time sunlight or ultraviolet light can cause it to weaken and fall apart. Fishing line is purchased on small spools and is sold in sporting goods stores. Personally, I use fishing line for two purposes. I use it to do my preliminary stringing while I am designing a necklace (I transfer the beads to a better material for the final product), and to string together "raw" strands of beads. There is no needle necessary. I would never use this material for a final beaded piece.

What To Look For In Any Bead Program

November 16th, 2009 Laura Kay Posted in Jewelry Making No Comments »

by Laura Kay

Running your own jewelry business is hard work, and sometimes the day-to-day business operations get in the way of doing what you love most: making beaded jewelry! Tasks like inventory tracking, customer invoicing and proper pricing are all tedious steps which can drain the energy and creativity right from you, leaving little time or interest in making jewelry with beads. It's easy to get overwhelmed with the business end of running your own jewelry business.

There are actually a lot of different options you can use when it comes to choosing software to run your jewelry business, from homemade spreadsheets and databases to spending a thousand dollars or more on some sophisticated jewelry store and business software packages. Here are three features you'll definitely want to have in any software package you buy to handle your beaded jewelry business:

Jewelry Pricing Calculator: Keeping track of what beads and supplies you have in stock is important for ordering and making sure you don't run out of essential items, but you should also be able to enter the items used in each piece and the software should be able to calculate the amount of money it costs to produce each piece. This will help make sure you'll never make a bead jewelry piece and sell it for less than you paid for the materials.

Invoice Printing and Customer Tracking: Tracking customers is just as important as being able to give your customers a professional receipt for their purchases. You don't want to hand someone a little piece of carbon paper with some scribbles on it after they spend $50 for an elegant beaded necklace and earring set. Tracking your customers is a great way to inform them of sales and craft shows you'll be at and really helps to grow your number of repeat customers!

Reasonable Price: When you're starting your beaded jewelry business you may not have a lot of money to spend initially, but you'd be surprised how quickly a good software package can pay for itself in saved time and professional results. Generally, you should expect to pay about $100 to $150 (but no more than that) for a decent bead software package.

Any beaded software package you buy should definitely include the features above as well as many others. Remember that a good bead jewelry program will actually help you make money by allowing you to communicate with your customers in a more professional manner and help you run all the tedious inventory and tracking functions that take up so much time. This way you'll have more time and creative energy to dedicate to designing and making your beaded jewelry!

Jewelry Making for Fun and Profit

November 10th, 2009 Ethan O. Tanner Posted in Jewelry Making No Comments »

There is an old adage that says work isn't really work if you enjoy what you're doing. If one of your hobbies is jewelry making, why not turn this activity into a source of income? You're already having fun anyway, and it wouldn't take a whole lot more to share your jewelry creations with people who would appreciate them and be more than happy to pay for them. With a bit of extra effort, time management and discipline, jewelry making for beginners is a great way to have fun and make a bit of extra money on the side.

Whether you're a beginner about to enter the jewelry making line of business for the first time or whether you're already an expert, there are always various staple factors to deliberate. First, it's crucial to have a decent amount of space where you can work unbothered for a certain length of time each day and where you can stow your jewelry making materials and tools. It doesn't have to be an enormous space, just a corner or room where you can focus on bringing your ideas to life and be away from unwarranted distractions.

If you haven't already, determine the type of jewelry you are going to produce. If you're just getting your feet wet in the jewelry making domain, begin with something easy. Imagine what type of jewelry you'd enjoy and feel comfortable wearing and conduct your jewelry making processes from there. Whatever materials your work might require are readily purchasable either on the net or in an actual retail store. Then, as you become more proficient at what you're doing, you can start researching other, more engaged jewelry making methods. Bear in mind that there is an excess of information resources to assist you in turning your hobby into a business, including books, specialty magazines, the web, and fellow jewelers.

After you've made a number of jewelry items, there are steps you can take to get other people interested in them. Be a walking advertisement for your jewelry making for beginners business. Wear some of your creations whenever you go out: wear them to work, when you go to the supermarket, or when you attend parties. Word of mouth is also a great way to let other people know about your jewelry making endeavor. Show some of your finished pieces to family and friends, and encourage them to spread the word.

The noteworthy thing to remember is that you keep on enjoying jewelry making and that you pride yourself in your creations. Your love for this hobby and business will reward you mentally and monetarily. Your passion for jewelry making will be the central factor in sustaining your creativity level and it will allow you to muster up the designs that appreciative clients will buy. Never forget the 'fun' factor in jewelry making, as this will be mirrored in your portfolio, and the 'profit' element will come after.

Jewelry Making: Fantastic For All Ages

November 3rd, 2009 Wendy Racklave Posted in Jewelry Making No Comments »

The art of jewelry making has always been a great past time for many women and men to join in on. Presently, one of the most popular jewelry making trends is bead jewelry.

Bead jewelry is the easiest form of making jewelry for beginners. There are a plethora of young girls that simply adore making a variety of creations from beads. The craft is extremely simple and pretty much anyone can engage in making jewelry by this means.

When you commence in jewelry making you can create your own creations that do not look like anything that you have ever seen before. The main objective in creating adorable bead jewelry is creativity. A lot of young girls will commence in the art so they can give their creations away to people that they adamantly care about.

There are so many different materials that you can use when making bead jewelry as well. The main thing that you need to have when making bead jewelry is an imagination as well as the willingness to want to create a stunning piece of art. Many will find that the fruit of labors may turn out looking a lot better then they could have ever imagined.

One of the latest fashion statements that many people have probably seen with bead jewelry is cell phone charms. A lot of people are making little charms to hang off of their cell phones to give their phones a little bit of added personality.

These charms are extremely popular with younger girls. It allows them the opportunity to make their phones appear different in comparison to their friends phones. A lot of the materials that adults may see as a little too outlandish are perfect for young girls to utilize.

Jewelry making is an art, despite what anyone has to say. It takes a great amount of patience and creativity to create something that you would have no problem showing people. However, many older people have turned their attention away from jewelry making, and many young girls are just getting started.

Regardless of how hold you get, you should never turn your back away from creative crafts. It seems as if women and men get older things that brought them happiness and joy such as jewelry making begin to be thrown to the back of their minds. They simply lose sight of the things in this life that make them think outside the box.

Jewelry making does not have an age limit on it, anyone can make gorgeous creations. Jewelry making is an art that allows beauty to be left in the eyes of the beholder.

How To Make Money With a Home Based Jewelry Business

October 13th, 2009 Laurel Kay Posted in Jewelry Making 3 Comments »

by Lora Kay

If you're looking for a way to increase your income from home, then you should really consider learning how to make custom jewelry. Making jewelry can be a fun pastime that can really make some money if you get good at it and begin selling on your own. Jewelry making is a relaxing way to unwind for a few minutes or a few hours. Of course, you don't have to try to sell your handcrafted jewelry. Instead you could simply give it away as gifts, wear it yourself, or offer to repair other pieces of jewelry with the skills you acquire from jewelry making.

Beginning your own beaded jewelry business may seem scary at first, but if you stand back and look at the whole picture you realize it's actually pretty easy. To start making your own jewelry for fun or for extra income you first need to think about the general steps you'll want to follow:

First, you'll need to think about jewelry and do some basic "research" into what kind of jewelry you might like to make. This can be a lot of fun! You'll want to look at jewelry in stores, study jewelry ads in magazines and even pay attention to what sort of jewelry other people are wearing. You can start considering how certain pieces of jewelry are designed. And don't forget, you don't have to stay with traditional jewelry materials. Some of the hottest fashion trends nowadays includes making "junk" jewelry out of unusual pieces of trash! Think outside the handmade jewelry box!

Now that you have an idea of how handmade jewelry is fashionable you can begin really learning the techniques to create your own jewelry. First you may need to do a little more shopping online for cheap craft supplies which you can use to practice your blossoming jewelry making skills. Then you can teach yourself basic jewelry making skills by reading books, visiting jewelry making blogs, attending classes at the local bead store or just asking other jewelry makers for some help. This can take some patience and persistence, but don't forget that you should also be having fun while learning.

Finally, when you've designed some jewelry pieces of your own and you're ready to start selling your creations you can think about the sales process. Fortunately, jewelry can be sold almost anywhere these days. You can sell your jewelry online, at craft fairs, through local tabloid advertisements and even in small storefronts and through your family members. There are lots of different things you can do promote your custom jewelry business and there are lots of venues you can use to sell and display your jewelry.

Learning how to make your own jewelry gives you lifelong skills in a craft and it can teach you a lot about running your own business. Even if you're going to make jewelry for person use, you'll still have the skills you need to make money on the side by offering to fix jewelry for family members instead of paying someone to repair broken jewelry items. By making and selling your own custom jewelry you can meet lots of new people, make some money and have fun all at the same time!

Work From Home With Making Jewelry

September 8th, 2009 Wendy Racklave Posted in Jewelry Making No Comments »

When you are sick and tired of running to the office every day and working for someone you have never met, or working at a job you hate, it is time to leave. You could be dying to call it quits, but have no idea what you will do when you leave. Well, one fantastic idea is to do jewelry making. This is a wonderful way to make a solid income while spending time at home with your family.

Everyone wants to leave the job they are in. We all want to tell our bosses to "stick it were the sun don't shine", and storm out of the office, grab our bags and leave with a huge smile on our faces. That smile will probably stay there for a few days, but then you will realize that you do not have any other way of making money.

Now, before you tell your boss to shove it, you may want to make sure that you have an income coming in, or at least a backup plan. If you are looking for a few cool ideas to working from home, then the best place to start would be online, you will find a lot of work from home ideas that will get your going.

If already have an idea, like jewelry making, then you will want to find ways to make this idea or dream, a reality. Not many people know how to make jewelry, and depending on the type of jewelry you are trying to make, it could be a very expensive thing to start up.

This is why you may want to consider taking up a course in jewelry making, so that you can go into it full heartedly. There is nothing worse than coming up with an idea only to find that you are no good at it once you have quit your job. That will only mean that you will have to learn very quickly.

If the point is to work at home and spend time with the family, then you can set up a website. You can hire someone to do this for you, or better yet, get a friend or family member with good knowledge of the internet, because you can find great free website builders to make your own website.

Once you have set everything up for your business you can start to advertise. You can do this through various methods, but most people will want to try your jewelry on and see it. This is why it is a good idea to have it on display. You can set up a mini office at a willing shop nearby, or you can transform your garage or spare room into a shop to make this easy for people to buy from you.

There is one mistake a lot of people make when they get excited about making their own beaded jewelry that you should avoid. It's easy to get caught up in the thrill of making jewelry and run off to the craft store, only to forget some of the most important materials and tools. To keep from doing this, you can make a list of the materials you need - this keeps you from forgetting important supplies as well as buying ones which you really don't need.

Before you get started, you'll need to know what you're looking for. When it comes to stringing beads, Tigertail is a good material to choose. It is very strong but it does tend to kink more easily than do some other materials. An alternative choice is soft-flex wire. You'll probably also want to get some crimping beads. These help hold beads in place as you work - a crimping tool is also a good choice. While you could use a pair of pliers (which is cheaper), a crimping tool is well worth the extra expense since the results you'll get are far better.

Keep in mind that beads come in every conceivable size, color, style and material, so don't keep yourself limited to just regular old beads! You can choose from a wide variety of beads to make each and every piece you create an original.

Before you actually string your beads, it's a good idea to lay them out and have a closer look at them to make sure that you're happy with how they look together. A bead board can be helpful here, since this will let you lay out your beads and see how they'll look strung together. One good general rule is to wait until the next day after laying out your beads before you start stringing - if they look as good to you in the morning as the night before, you'll know that the piece will be one you can be proud of.

The only limit to the styles of jewelry you can make is your imagination. Of course, the style you choose to create will influence the length and the way that you string your beads; measuring carefully beforehand is key. It's a good idea to get a measuring guide to help you as you get starting making jewelry. There's nothing worse than making a piece of jewelry only to find out that it's not the right length! You'll usually have to remake the whole piece to fix these kinds of measuring mistakes.

When you make your own beaded jewelry, you have the opportunity to create a thing of beauty - and you'll get the satisfaction of a job well done. This jewelry will be loved by whoever you give it to; and you'll like having these pieces for yourself too. However, you might want to get some detailed directions or take some classes before you start to make sure that you can create high quality beaded jewelry.

The transition from simple to more advanced work can be accomplished by experimenting with units of metal which vary in size, shape and texture until a good workable design has been arranged. Then the sequence of the processes will be determined and the working plan made. In this way, the beginner will build up a knowledge of the craft which will inspire him to do more finished work.

Several inexpensive metals, both in sheet and wire form, can be used to make interesting jewelry. For the beginner, copper and brass are recommended because of their low cost, but even advanced jewelers who work almost exclusively in sterling silver frequently use copper and brass for variety and color.

As far as construction is concerned, all the metals named can be used interchangeably. When the beginning craftsman becomes more skillful he may want to work more often in sterling silver which, although it costs a little more, is a fine adaptable metal.

The different metals vary in hardness. Annealing is a heating process which is given to the metal to make it soft and pliable. Most of the metals may be purchased annealed. If the metal has to be annealed, lay it on a screen and hot plate until the heat turns it a glowing red, then set it aside to cool or plunge it into water for quick cooling.

COPPER is used in its pure metallic state. Its reddish-brown color gives it a warm outdoor quality. Cold rolled and annealed sheet is smooth and easy to work. It can be polished and lacquered for a permanent finish.

BRASS is an alloy of copper and zinc, harder than copper. It is gold in color. It takes a high polish and is lacquered to preserve the luster.

STERLING SILVER is an alloy of pure silver and a small percentage of another metal, usually copper, to harden it. It is a more precious metal than copper or brass, it is easy to work and can be finished in several different ways; polished for a soft luster, given a high polish, oxidized for depth of color and then polished for highlights.

IRON is taken from iron ore and, when treated, is both tough and flexible and can be pulled into wire. If lacquered, iron will not rust and its dark color and dull texture contrast well with the other metals used.

TIN has the whiteness of silver and is used in many important alloys, among them being solder. Tin is used for solder, in pure state or alloyed with lead.

Sparkling Sterling Silver Beads

August 3rd, 2009 Henry Raymonds Posted in Jewelry Findings, Jewelry Making No Comments »

Silver beads are sought after to make necklaces for fashion wear. The sparkling precious metal is a great versatile base for necklaces. The price of sterling silver beads is much lower when compared to gold and thus it has mass wearer appeal.

The majority of people are of the notion that sterling silver is actually 100% pure silver. This is however contrary to the truth because sterling silver is actually an alloy. Pure silver, which is measured as 99.9% silver is actually too soft to be used for any such application.

This is why it is mixed with another metal to produce an alloy like sterling silver which is far more durable than 100% pure silver. In the case of sterling silver beads, they are composed of 92.5% silver and the remaining 7.5% is of another metal like copper.

The addition of copper works to solidify the alloy which can then be molded into different shapes.

Sterling silver beads are produced by many different manufacturers from many different countries. The different manufacturers make use of stamps to differentiate their product and that of their competitors.

Also, the buyers can see the origin of the silver and the stamp of the manufacturer and the country the silver comes from before buying the silver.

Sterling silver beads provide a cost-effective means of making jewelry. They are universally appealing and form the basis for a unique design that combines elegance and charm in the craftsmanship.

The market for silver beads has a variety of options for a buyer to choose from. There are a range of products like high end designer products to exquisite yet moderately priced jewelry and collectors items.

The beaded sterling silver necklace is perhaps the most popular kind of silver necklace out there. In recent years it has become one of the hot favorites of the world. Such necklaces have a great appeal and can catch the eye of the passerby from quite a distance with their shiny charm.

Rock Tumbler Instructions That Will Give You Outstanding Results

July 23rd, 2009 Richard Rockman Posted in Jewelry Making, Rock Tumblers 57 Comments »

The following Rock tumbler instructions will give you a general idea of what you need to do in order to create flawless shiny stones that you can then utilize to create beautiful intricate art pieces. The most popular rock tumbler is referred to as a rotary drum. This particular drum polishes rocks better then any other tumbler on the market today.

The process by which the machine polishes does take a prolonged period of time. You should expect the process to last about a month. It would behoove you to keep records of the process and how long the machine takes to polish one batch of rocks this way you get an estimate of how long it will take you to complete your craft.

You will need to have a few basic materials handy before you begin utilizing your machine. You will of course need the machine, some rocks, silicone carbide grit, a decent amount of water, some plastic pellets, and a polishing compound. The instructions on how to utilize your machine are actually pretty self explanatory and you should follow them verbatim.

1. You need to gather up your rocks and fill your machine about 2/3 or 3/4 full with rocks. If you are not going to be utilizing that many rocks or you do not have an adequate amount on hand, you can utilize the plastic pellets to fill in.

2. You will then add water to the rocks, be careful as not to cover the rocks completely. A level just below the top layer of rocks should be perfect. After water has been added you may then add in the "course grind" grit.

3. You should then turn the machine on and allow the machine time to knock off all the hard edges on the rocks. The stones should come out appearing soft in appearance without the pointy edges that rocks often times have.

4. After you have completely finished the first step you will then rinse the stones off so they can be clear of any extra debris that was knocked off from the machine. Your first step should take you about 12-24 hours to complete successfully.

5. You will then repeat all the above steps with different grit sizes for a period of one month. Going next to a fine grit, then to a pre-polish, a polish and finally a burnishing process using soap, to clean everything up completely.

6. Marvel at the beautiful tumbled gemstones you have created!

As long as you adhere to all the guidelines in your rock tumbler instruction booklet, as well as the above guidelines you should be able to consistently have rocks that are beautiful and shiny in appearance.

The process may take a little longer then you would like, however beauty does not know time and can't be rushed. The end result will make it all worthwhile.
