How to Use a Rotary Rock Tumbler Kit | Tumbler Instructions

A rock tumbler is a tool commonly used by rock collectors and geologists to polish rocks. It is amazing to see a rough rock transformed into a beautiful gem, just be spending time in the tumbler. This article provides you with rock tumbler instructions so you can use a rock tumbler and make it perform its' magic.

For an aspiring geologist, gemologist, or mineralogist, a rock tumbler kids will enjoy can be both a toy and an educational tool. However, there are many types suited to different purposes, and not all of them will work for an amateur.

A standard rock tumbler kit can be found at most toy stores.
This rock kit usually contains the tumbler along with some rocks, grit, and a few jewelry findings. With proper care, a good rock kit can be used over and over and can last indefinitely. However, the small size and small power of the motor will limit the size of rocks that can be used. Should the tumblers break, it may be difficult to find replacement parts.
More than likely you would be looking at buying a new rock kit.

The type of rock kit available from toy stores includes rotating or rotational rock tumblers. In a rotating tumbler, the rocks fall over and over, rolling around and polishing them as they collide with one another, similar to the way mountain rocks are polished by the steady collision with a mountain stream. It is advisable to choose a rock kit made by a company that has been around for a while in case you need a replacement part.

Vibration (or "agitating") tumblers are higher quality and generally more expensive form of rock tumbler. Instead of physically rotating the rock, vibration tumblers either use ultrasound or spin around the vertical axis. They work much more quickly, one to two weeks, as opposed to about a month for a rotational tumbler. They also maintain the essential shape of the rock, rather than producing a uniformly round rock. So unless you want all of your rocks to have the same basic round shape, you will need to consider a vibration rock kit. They are a bit quieter as well.

Size is extremely important. Rock tumblers are sized according to the weight of the load they can continuously bear. Since it can take a month or more for a rotary tumbler to polish a rock, it is important that the tumbler can handle the weight of the rock. The most common cause of rotor failure or broken belts is an overloaded barrel. Large barrels can hold both large and small rocks, but small barrels can only hold small rocks. This seems logical, but on the day that your tumbler breaks, you will regret purchasing a small barrel!

At the same time, large barrels generally cost more money (no surprise), and you will need to balance your budget against the size and type of rocks you hope to polish.

Once you've chosen and purchased your tumbler, you will also purchase a few accessories for your polishing. You will need Vaseline to seal the barrel against leaks- an ordinary store brand of petroleum jelly is fine. You will also need extra grit, unless of course you want to use the grit purchase as an excuse to buy a nicer tumbler! Keep in mind the time that will be required to tumble (a week or two for vibration or a month for rotational tumblers) and the noise that will be generated by the tumbler. If noise is a concern, you may want to purchase a large cooler to insulate and minimize the sound.

A basic rock tumbler can inspire a future career in the geology or gemology. It can also lead to the purchase of a larger and nicer rock kit! Some children may be satisfied with a simple rotary tumbler as a supplement to their rock collection, while others may seek better tumblers in their quest to collect amazing rocks. Regardless of what kind you get, a rock tumbler will inevitably be an educational and entertaining toy.

Rock Polishing Equipment – A Lapidary’s Friend

August 18th, 2009 Richard Rockman Posted in Rock Tumblers 66 Comments »

Rock polishing equipment for the lapidary is as necessary to him as a wrench is to a mechanic. A good lapidary can fix and repair jewelry, customize silver and gold, and polish and do ring sizing. For the rocks, though, you need the proper tools for getting them into shape. Tools like rock saws, cabbing stones, and geode cutters.

Of course a good grinder is always handy if you're into being a lapidary. Maybe even some diamond blades, rock hammers, and rock cleaners. There's a lot of different needs for getting things just right. Some of these tools can be quite expensive.

Cabbing involves grinding, sanding, and polishing. Some of these machines can cost well over a thousand dollars. They usually come with their own adjustable and independent cooling system. The good ones will drip clean water on the wheels and not the dirty bubbling water. And the water can be controlled so you can get anywhere from a stream to a small drip, depending on what you need.

Rock Tumbler Instructions That Will Give You Outstanding Results

July 23rd, 2009 Richard Rockman Posted in Jewelry Making, Rock Tumblers 57 Comments »

The following Rock tumbler instructions will give you a general idea of what you need to do in order to create flawless shiny stones that you can then utilize to create beautiful intricate art pieces. The most popular rock tumbler is referred to as a rotary drum. This particular drum polishes rocks better then any other tumbler on the market today.

The process by which the machine polishes does take a prolonged period of time. You should expect the process to last about a month. It would behoove you to keep records of the process and how long the machine takes to polish one batch of rocks this way you get an estimate of how long it will take you to complete your craft.

You will need to have a few basic materials handy before you begin utilizing your machine. You will of course need the machine, some rocks, silicone carbide grit, a decent amount of water, some plastic pellets, and a polishing compound. The instructions on how to utilize your machine are actually pretty self explanatory and you should follow them verbatim.

1. You need to gather up your rocks and fill your machine about 2/3 or 3/4 full with rocks. If you are not going to be utilizing that many rocks or you do not have an adequate amount on hand, you can utilize the plastic pellets to fill in.

2. You will then add water to the rocks, be careful as not to cover the rocks completely. A level just below the top layer of rocks should be perfect. After water has been added you may then add in the "course grind" grit.

3. You should then turn the machine on and allow the machine time to knock off all the hard edges on the rocks. The stones should come out appearing soft in appearance without the pointy edges that rocks often times have.

4. After you have completely finished the first step you will then rinse the stones off so they can be clear of any extra debris that was knocked off from the machine. Your first step should take you about 12-24 hours to complete successfully.

5. You will then repeat all the above steps with different grit sizes for a period of one month. Going next to a fine grit, then to a pre-polish, a polish and finally a burnishing process using soap, to clean everything up completely.

6. Marvel at the beautiful tumbled gemstones you have created!

As long as you adhere to all the guidelines in your rock tumbler instruction booklet, as well as the above guidelines you should be able to consistently have rocks that are beautiful and shiny in appearance.

The process may take a little longer then you would like, however beauty does not know time and can't be rushed. The end result will make it all worthwhile.

“Must Have” Rock Tumbling Supplies

July 21st, 2009 Richard Rockman Posted in Rock Tumblers 115 Comments »

When beginning a new hobby, it is important to know where to start. The best place is to get to know what sort of equipment you will require. Hopefully, I can offer you a few tips on the correct rock tumbling supplies.

A tumbling machine is your very first step. This is essential for the rotation of the actual tumbling process. Since different sizes are available, do some checking into which one is appropriate for you.

Next, you need items called "barrels". These are actually what you put the rocks into for the tumbling process. Since they are most often made of plastic and have to be used to tumble rocks over and over, they will need to be replaced more often than the tumblers.

Since the rock tumbling process consists of four steps, you will need one barrel for each step. So, plan on starting with four barrels.

Now, we get down to the nitty gritty. Well, really just grit. Silicon carbide abrasive grit is used next. There are different sizes, but you will only need three to start with. Hardware, home improvement and rock or mineral stores are where to find this.

You will want to get one tub of size eighty, one of size two hundred twenty, and one of size four hundred when buying your grit. Ask for help in the store if you have trouble.

Now we have reached the point when you need cerium oxide polish. When the tumbling is done and all of those rough, sharp edges are removed, you need to put them into a fresh, clean barrel. Then you add the cerium oxide and some water. You know that part of the process when the stones appear to be shiny and a resemble glass? Well, this step is what makes that happen. Since you only need a tiny bit of polish for each batch, you can buy a very small container at first.

Okay, pellets are last. You must have round and plastic pellets. They protect the rocks from damaging each other while tumbling. They get tossed in at the beginning of the process and really help keep chipped rocks to a minimum.

Well, now you are informed as to the basic rock tumbling supplies. What are you waiting for? You should be on your way to the store right now!

If you need to use larger stones or have a larger quantity of stones, then the mid-sized tumbler would be best for you. The larger the unit the more rocks they require to run properly. So, if your need is for a production run, then there is a commercial unit available to meet your need.

No matter which Lortone rock tumbler you decide meets your needs, it is important to remember that no tumbler machine will hold up over time if it is overloaded. Overloading can cause the motor to be over worked and the belt can break under the pressure.

Use you tumbler on flat surfaces only and follow the recommendations for your model. Your Lortone rock tumbler will last for years with proper use.

The Lortone tumblers come in models with a molded rubber barrel that has a sure-seal closure. They are anywhere from 1. 5 pounds to 12 pounds and are very simple to operate. The motor is quiet, the machine is sturdy and the end result is thrilling. These machines can also be very effective for tumbling jewelry.

The Lortone rock tumbler comes in a large assortment beginning with the small tumblers that are perfect if you are just getting started, tumblers that have twin barrels, three barrels and the large capacity tumbler. There are also different kits available plus rocks and all the accessories you will need for your projects.
