Best Places To Find Collectible Rocks and Lapidary Rough

Collecting rocks is one of the hobbies that many people love to do. Actually, there is quite a good number that collect these items more as investment. Even if they have to shell out a huge amount, they don't really mind.

However, most people start doing this just for fun. What they do is that they pick stones as they come across them, whether they're near their homes or in far places like in camp sites. But just like other collectible items, collectible rocks or lapidary rough are also limited in variety, so better specimens replace them in time.

Now, if you want to add collectible rocks to your investments, then might as well get a basic knowledge on how to identify them. This is very important so you know the value of the rock you want to collect.

Okay, start by learning the three major groups of rocks which are the igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. These 3 have varying characteristics, so read on geology books and look at geological maps to provide you with more information and guide you in collecting.

So where to begin your search for collectible rocks?

Here are some of the options that you can consider: 1. mountains, 2. interior hill lands, 3. piedmont areas, 4. road cuts, 5. outcrops, 6. hills, 7. steep slopes, and 8. quarries 9. online auction sites.

But from these choices, your best locations would be man-made excavations and unweathered outcrops.

But if you're not up for the challenge of finding collectible rocks from these places, you can always do so online. That's right! The Internet offers you a hassle-free way to find and buy collectible rocks, without leaving the comfort of your home.

Simply search online for these items and you will sure find more options, including lapidary rough mineral specimens, fossil specimens, fossil replicas, stone carvings, eggs and spheres, and shells.

Collecting rocks is really a worthwhile activity. But if you are among those who do this for profit, then be sure you are able to identify these collectible rocks.

The lapidary saw blades are used in order to cut all the rough sides and edges off of precious stones so they can be made into what you desire. You can pretty much make an assumption that since the blades are cutting rocks that they have to remain extremely sharp in order to carry out the job successfully.

The blades of the lapidary equipment are the most important thing of the machine. If they become worn down and dull you will need to either sharpen the blades to try to bring back their ability to cut as you wish or be forced to have to replace the blades entirely.

Lapidary artists need to ensure that the blades of their machines keep their sharpness at all costs. You need to be well aware that the blades should not be utilized for anything besides their principal purpose of cutting rocks.

An Intro To Lapidary and Gemstones

Most of the time you will find people that collect stamps, some collect coins and other collect collectors beer cans and soda cans with pictures of their favorite sports start printed on them. These are normal things to collect, as they are not too expensive, but then you will find people collecting things like diamond, gold coins, lapidary and gemstones, which gets a bit expensive, just like collecting painting and other more expensive things.

However, when you are in love with anything that s pretty and shiny it is hard to stay away from it. It is like someone who loves to shop. This type of person will spend hours in a store trying on things just to see how items will look on him or her. This type of person will also use shopping as a sort of therapy.

So, when this person is feeling down in the dumps he or she will go out to the nearest mall and spend a ton of money on things that he or she does not need - most of the time, for females and some males, it is shoes. Some people collect tie in the this manner too, and other even collect dresses, most of which will not ever be used.

With collecting comes the problem of where to put it. There are plenty of special collector's boxes or display cabinets for items, and when it comes to lapidary/gemstones you will have to use certain display boxes for the cut gemstones. You can also collect them in jewelry form and display them on a jewelry stand.

When you collect gemstones you have to know a lot about them. You cannot just like certain gemstone and collect for the look alone. You should take the time to learn the cuts and the significance of each for your collection. You should know when you are looking at a high quality stone or a poorer one.

Lapidary gemstone
collecting is more like collecting art, and you should look at the gemstones in this way instead of just stones that make up jewelry. You can of course collect the jewelry, but lapidary can also be used to sculpt and create wonderful shapes and patterns using gemstones that are too large to place inside a price of jewelry.

Once you have found out and learned all you can about the different gemstones, you can then go out and start hunting for them. You can find great stones online and through auction sites, but you can also go to specific dealers and cutters who will be able to show you the best stones they have.

How to Use Lapidary Rough

August 21st, 2009 Richard Rockman Posted in Lapidary Rough 70 Comments »

We have lapidary equipment for sale at great prices.

If you have never heard of a lapidary then you may want to learn more about it if you are looking for a fun hobby. If you'd like to become a lapidary then you want to become a gem cutter. It is a person that makes lapidary rough into a beautiful gemstone.

Did you know that gems do not come out of the earth beautiful like they look when they are in jewelry? Well, they do not. There is a lot of work that goes into making them into the beautiful rock or mineral that you normally see. If you want to learn more about how this process works you can buy a book about it or you can go online and read more about it.

Lapidary rough includes some of the material around the gem from when it was mined. A lapidary will then take the rough and use different tools, like lapidary saws, to cut, shape and polish the rocks or minerals. A well cut gem will shine and look very impressive. If not cut well then it will look dull and ugly.

The lapidary rough should first be sawed by a lapidary. This is to get all of the excess materials off of it. The gem can then be cleaned with water or oil to remove anything left on it during the cutting. The stone will then need to be ground using a grinder. Silicon carbide wheels or diamond impregnated wheels are used to grind it. After that process is done it will need to be sanded to remove scratches and make it shine.

You can go online to learn more about becoming a lapidary and what is involved in the process. There are also a lot of books at the library that have great information about it. You will need to buy a really good saw and some other tools. Make sure that you learn as much as you can so you can become a great lapidary.

When you finally learn how to do lapidary work you can create beautiful rock or mineral out of ugly lapidary rough. You don't even have to mine for it yourself. You can just go online and find many sites that will sell you lapidary rough.
